Its position on the side of a hill gives it the appearance of a fortress. In ancient times, it was called "El villar de Laguardia" and in the Middle Ages was one of the largest and most active towns in the region. From a distance one can see the Parish Church of the Asunción de Nuestra Señora, built on an old defensive bastion. Inside, there is a 16th century altarpiece, well-known for the expressiveness of its images. A walk around its streets reveals a number of palatial mansions, one of which is especially outstanding: the Casa del Indiano, with its coat of arms, artistic balconies and railings.

Its Plaza Mayor is a good place for meeting one´s friends on lazy summer evenings. Within walking distance of the town you will find the "La Chabola de la Hechicera" dolmen, a megalithic construction that was apparently used as a mass pantheon and which, according to legend, was inhabited by a witch of an ancient race of mythological beings, similar to the gentiles of other regions of the Basque Country.
